OK. You’re going to move out of one place and into another. Chances are you have collected a few (or quite a few) items that should be cast aside. This is something we all know. This is not something that actually happens. It is hard to make the time. Making choices is hard. Putting things in boxes is hard. Taking things out of boxes and realizing you have no place to put it or no desire to put it somewhere is hardest of all.
The answer? A Pre-Move Checklist!
Four Weeks Before the Move
Purge the Junk. There are things you know you won’t move. They are broken, old, out of style or just worthless. Throw those things out. The speed of this is critical. You don’t want to think about it. If you do, skip it for now. You will have cleared out at least 20% of your clutter in no time at all.
Three Weeks Before the Move
Make Piles for Giving. There are plenty of things in your closet or your kitchen that are still good but not going to make the move. Don’t worry too much about this. Decide which charities or thrift shops or other destinations you have in mind. Then throw that stuff into those piles. You’re going to cut down your pre-move clutter by another 20%.
Two Weeks Before the Move
Be Ruthlessly Honest. Go thru the items that you are formally packing and consider if you are really going to use them or not.
One Week Before the Move
Purge the Freezer. Unless it is something you really really want to eat, it is probably going to be destroyed during transport. Better toss it now and lighten the load.
Moving Day! Don’t stress. You're good to go! :)
